Each type of acne is characterized by specific criteria; determining the type of acne is typically achieved by a simple visual examination. What is the cause of acne?
No matter what type of acne you have, this unpleasant and embarrassing condition mainly occurs when the pores of the skin become blocked by oils and dead skin cells. When pores become clogged, they may push outward and form pimples; in some cases, bacteria attack the dead skin cells and cause redness and swelling.
What are the four different types of acne?
Mild acne typically consists of a few blackheads or whiteheads, without redness or inflammation. You may have a small scattering of pimples on the forehead or nose; if left untreated, this type of breakout may progress to moderate acne.
Moderate acne is characterized by a small number of reddened, inflamed pimples on the face, back, and chest. If these blemishes are left untreated, or if they are squeezed or scrubbed, they may worsen and progress to more severe acne.
Severe acne is obviously red and inflamed, and typically infects the face, neck, back, and chest. The inflammation is more deep-seated at this stage, and squeezing the nodules may lead to scarring. In most cases, this type of acne cannot be successfully treated with over-the-counter remedies, and the assistance of a dermatologist is necessary.
The most severe type of acne is often referred to as cystic acne. An individual suffering from this condition will exhibit nodules, pustules, and papules on the face, neck, chest, back and even the upper arms; the cysts originate deep below the surface of the skin and can be extremely painful. Scarring is a serious problem at this stage, and the advice of a dermatologist or physician is necessary at this point for successful treatment.
